The Corchorus plant is eaten in many countries of Africa, Asia and the Middle-East. In Togo it is known as Ademe, in Nigera as Ewedu and in Jamaica as Callaloo. The plant fibres are commonly known as jute. In Africa, people use the leaves for sauces. The leaves are rich in beta-carotene, iron, calcium and vitamine C.
